Inside amfAR’s Halloween Gala, Where the Ghosts Wore Couture
Naomi Campbell, Karlie Kloss, and Ellie Goulding were among the superstars at the Naked Heart Foundation and amfAR’s glitzy Saturday night party.
Halloween is an unalloyed celebration of appearance, which is why it’s best to spend the holiday with models, if you can. At the Naked Heart Foundation and amfAR’s Fabulous Fund Fair on Saturday night—a spooked-out carnival of sorts in SoHo’s cavernous Skylight Clarkson North—the professionally beautiful like Constance Jablonski, Andreja Pejic, and Maria Borgesdonned the stunning couture and ornate makeup that’s part of their day job, but gave it the fantasy twist to make it right for the annual celebration of chills and thrills.
lenty of cyborg-robot types roamed, a getup ideal for models who appear to have been created in a lab anyway. A handful of Playboy bunnies (fashionPlayboy bunnies) could reliably be found around one of several bar stations. Jeff Koons art directed the space, which was packed with designer-sponsored carnival games, like Givenchy’s claw machine (catch a cat stuffed animal, win sunglasses) and Louis Vuitton bumper cars. The artist’s pièce de résistance was the night’s host, Natalia Vodianova. He styled her as a red Koons balloon sculpture in a latex bodysuit and large, industrial strength balloons (creative and hot: the Halloween white whale). Later in the night, the model and philanthropist struggled to hold a microphone to her lips thanks to the balloons, but she managed to encouraged the crowd to, “Spend money and have fun. I don’t care in what order.” (The crowd listened. They raised nearly $2 million for amfAR and the Naked Heart Foundation.)
The numerous household names in attendance stayed for a good part of the party, which ended after midnight. Karlie Kloss, who bleached her hair lightning-white over the summer, leaned into the new look with a Marilyn Monroe costume. She was talking to a Josh Kushner look-alike in a tux, among others. Naomi Campbellwas nearby, making her goddess literal by wearing an ornate headdress.
